On January 19, 2009 my son John and his friend Ben were 16 years old when they were killed in a auto accident. Driving at night in a rural area. The road they were driving on was paved and suddenly turned to gravel. My son lost control of the vehicle on the gravel and hit a tree, both boys were killed instantly. Because of the severity of the accident we were not able to see them after the accident. When he left home that night to go to a friends house, he looked back at me and said “love ya momma” that was the last time I ever saw him. Sometimes I think that is a blessing because I just remember his beautiful smile.
John and Ben were both good boys. Loved their families, had many friends, loved playing sports, loved the outdoors.
I never lost a minute of sleep worrying about John because he was such a good son and I miss him with all my heart.
I would never have guessed this is what was planned for my life but someday I will know why and be with my son again. I speak monthly at STOP classes presented by our county law enforcement to be an example that this can and does happen to ordinary people and that everyone must make it a priority to help teens learn to drive safely and responsibly.
