Kevan was an amazing young man. He was full of life and loved people and animals, especially cats. He had struggled through his life with learning disabilities and some physical issues due to being oxygen deprived at birth. Somehow he overcame these issues and taught himself to play guitar in the last two years of his life. He could hear something and play it back nearly perfect in just minutes, yet those same hands caused him problems when it came to writing or doing something as simple as making a sandwhich. He was so proud of his little red car, handed down to him by his Dad who had drove it for many years. We had put a new engine in it and had everything checked including brakes. What we didn’t think about was the fact that it didn’t have anti-lock brakes or an air bag. Kevan was coming home on a country road and swerved to avoid hitting a dog. He locked up his brakes and hit a tree. He was wearing his seat belt but it was ultimately what killed him. In a crash, the seat belt tightens and it pushed in and severed the aortic valve to his heart. Other than a deep bruise across his chest from the seat belt, there was not a mark on him. He died instantly. We thought that we had done everything to make his car safe but his inexperience coupled with a lack of anti lock brakes and an airbag, greatly limited his changes of survival. If I had to do it all over again, I would have never given him that car. We would have at least got one that was a few years newer and had an air bag. Kevan’s loss leaves a great hole in our hearts as he was our only child. He is sadly missed by many friends and family and all the lives that he touched in his few short years on earth.
